Course Description

The Tokyo Marathon is an Abbott World Marathon Major known for its flat and fast road course. Starting at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and finishing at Tokyo Station, the race is a net-downhill, point-to-point course that has been redesigned in recent years to remove late-race bridge climbs, significantly increasing its speed and Personal Record (PR) potential.

Course Layout and Terrain

The course is entirely on paved city streets and features a unique layout that combines a point-to-point trajectory with several out-and-back spurs. These sections, particularly around Nihonbashi and Asakusa, allow runners to see elite athletes and fellow participants heading in the opposite direction. Runners should be mindful of the numerous 180-degree turns required at the turnaround points of each spur.

Elevation and Notable Sections

The elevation profile is characterized by a significant drop in the first 5 kilometers, followed by a remarkably level path for the remainder of the race.

  • The Opening Descent: The first few kilometers feature a loss of approximately 30 meters (100 feet) in elevation. This early downhill can lead to an aggressive start that requires careful pace management to avoid early muscle fatigue.
  • The Flat Middle: From the 10K mark through the finish, the course remains nearly level, traversing major districts including Ginza and the area near the Tokyo Skytree.
  • The Finish: The final stretch toward the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station is flat and straight, providing an ideal corridor for a sustained finishing kick.

This is a top-tier PR and Boston-qualifying course due to its lack of significant hills and net-downhill start. The primary technical challenges are the 180-degree turnarounds and the potential for "tunneling" winds between skyscrapers in the business districts. It is best suited for rhythm runners who can capitalize on the fast opening miles and maintain a steady cadence through the flat, urban landscape. Success here often depends on disciplined pacing during the first 5K descent to ensure strength remains for the long, flat stretches late in the race.
