On race morning, most runners will choose to either load onto the buses at the Public Library on 5th Ave. & 42nd St. or take the Staten Island Ferry to the start. Staying near the midtown bus loading area may allow you to sleep in a little later on race day and walk to the buses. With at least 65 hotels within a half mile of the bus loading area, it should be easy to find a hotel in this area.
These hotels are also within walking distance of some of the local tourist attractions such as Times Square, the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center.

There are several hotels near the Finish Line in Central Park that allow runners to walk back their hotels. Most of these located west or southwest of the park.
Keep in mind that runners will not be able to exit right at the finish line (~67th St.). You will need to walk north through the gauntlet of medal distribution, ponchos, food/drink, etc. before exiting. After crossing the finish line, you may have to walk a half or full mile more to the runner exits at 77th, 81st and 85th Streets.
Hotels in this area are all approximately 20-25 minutes from both the Expo and from the Midtown Bus Loading (Public Library) area via the Subway (1.5 - 2.5 mile walk). In addition, they are about 30 minutes via the Subway from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.
