Run Woodstock Marathon

Course Description

The Run Woodstock Marathon is a classic Midwest trail race held within the Pinckney State Recreation Area near Gregory, Michigan. Part of a larger weekend "festival of races," the marathon is a hilly, technical trail course.

Course Layout and Terrain

The marathon follows a loop layout primarily utilizing the Potawatomi Trail. The terrain is 100% off-road, consisting of single-track trails that wind through dense hardwood forests. Runners should expect a technical surface characterized by exposed roots, rocks, and varying soil conditions that can become muddy or slick depending on recent weather. The layout is designed to be immersive, taking participants deep into the glacial hills of the recreation area.

Elevation and Notable Sections

The course is hilly. While there are no mountain-scale ascents, the course features "relentless" rolling hills that offer very few flat recovery sections.

  • The Potawatomi Loop: Known locally as the "Panty," this trail is famous for its constant short, steep climbs and corresponding descents.
  • Glacial Topography: The course traverses ridges and hollows formed by glacial activity, meaning turns are frequent and sightlines are often short.
  • Natural Obstacles: Notable sections include narrow wooden footbridges and segments with heavy root growth that require high knee lift and constant attention to foot placement.

This is not a PR (Personal Record) course for those accustomed to the road. The technical nature of the single-track and the cumulative fatigue from the constant undulations typically result in finishing times significantly slower than a standard road marathon. It is an ideal event for trail specialists and ultra-runners who value mental engagement and technical skill. PR attempts here are best measured against previous trail efforts rather than road times, as the course rewards those who can maintain a steady effort through the climbs of the Michigan woods.

Full Review:

Marathon was just one race of a whole fun running weekend. In keeping w/ the Woodstock theme there were bands, camping, yoga, tie dying and extra fun runs. Many folks just cam for their race and then left but if you stay the weekend it will be a way more satisfying experience.

Race Tips:

Its a trail race w/ many hills, some quite steep. While runners must pay attention to footing I never felt the course was exceedingly dangerous. Its a two loop course that is well marked. 7 aid stations. All w/ water and gatorade some w/ gel.

Travel/Logistics Tips:

The website lists some local hotels but runners really should camp and enjoy the vibe! Great peace sign (of course) medal. There was race day packet pick-up.
