5 Stars from 1 ReviewsThe Run Woodstock Marathon is a classic Midwest trail race held within the Pinckney State Recreation Area near Gregory, Michigan. Part of a larger weekend "festival of races," the marathon is a hilly, technical trail course.
The marathon follows a loop layout primarily utilizing the Potawatomi Trail. The terrain is 100% off-road, consisting of single-track trails that wind through dense hardwood forests. Runners should expect a technical surface characterized by exposed roots, rocks, and varying soil conditions that can become muddy or slick depending on recent weather. The layout is designed to be immersive, taking participants deep into the glacial hills of the recreation area.
The course is hilly. While there are no mountain-scale ascents, the course features "relentless" rolling hills that offer very few flat recovery sections.
This is not a PR (Personal Record) course for those accustomed to the road. The technical nature of the single-track and the cumulative fatigue from the constant undulations typically result in finishing times significantly slower than a standard road marathon. It is an ideal event for trail specialists and ultra-runners who value mental engagement and technical skill. PR attempts here are best measured against previous trail efforts rather than road times, as the course rewards those who can maintain a steady effort through the climbs of the Michigan woods.
