Course Description

The Paris Marathon is a world-class, World Athletics Elite Label road race that offers a predominantly flat and scenic tour of the French capital. While it is built for speed and serves as a popular Boston and Abbott World Marathon Majors qualifier, the course features specific technical challenges, including undulating sections along the river and various surface transitions.

Course Layout and Terrain

The course follows a large loop layout, beginning on the wide cobblestones of the Champs-Élysées and finishing near the Arc de Triomphe at Avenue Foch. The terrain is primarily paved road, but runners must navigate significant stretches of historic cobblestones in the opening mile and occasionally through city squares. The route travels through two major parks—the Bois de Vincennes (East) and the Bois de Boulogne (West)—which offer a transition from dense urban streets to wider, parkland paths.

Elevation and Notable Sections

While the overall elevation profile is flat, the race contains several tactical sections that can disrupt a steady rhythm:

  • The Parks: The stretches through the Bois de Vincennes (Miles 6–12) and the Bois de Boulogne (Miles 20–25) feature gentle rolling undulations. These areas are quieter and more exposed to wind than the city center.
  • The Seine Quayside: Between miles 16 and 19, the course follows the banks of the Seine. This section includes a series of short, sharp tunnels with steep downhills and immediate uphill exits that can stress the quadriceps and disrupt pacing.
  • Technical Turns: While much of the course utilizes broad boulevards, the transition in and out of the parklands involves several 90-degree turns and narrower passages.

The Paris Marathon offers strong PR (Personal Record) potential, but success depends on managing the "hidden" difficulty of the river tunnels and the late-race undulations in the Bois de Boulogne. The most challenging section is often the final 10K, where the crowds thin out in the park and the legs must handle the transition back to flat ground. It is an ideal course for runners who can maintain a high cadence on flat pavement while remaining agile enough to handle brief, punchy changes in grade and varied road surfaces.
