Manitoba Marathon

Winnipeg, MB

Course Description

The Manitoba Marathon is fast, exceptionally flat road course that winds through Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is one of the flattest courses in Canada, featuring a maximum elevation difference of just 30 feet between its highest and lowest points.

The race route is a sprawling loop that takes place entirely on paved city roads, residential streets, and asphalt park pathways. The course begins outside Princess Auto Stadium on Chancellor Matheson Road on the University of Manitoba campus. From there participants run through a diverse tour of Winnipeg’s historic neighborhoods, hugging scenic sections along the Assiniboine and Red River systems before tracking back to the campus for a unique finish inside the stadium turf on the football field level.

Notable landmarks on the course include passing the Provincial Legislative grounds on Broadway Avenue, running along the tree-lined riverside pavement of Wellington Crescent, and navigating the outdoor parkways of Assiniboine Park and Crescent Drive Park.

The course offers runners a great opportunity for Boston Qualifying times or Personal Records.

Great Organization and Great PR course if weather is good!

Full Review:

The course for 2017 started and ended in the Winnipeg Canadian Football League stadium. They allow you to go inside before the race, where you can use the bathrooms and stay out of the wind and rain. (in 2017 it was raining a little before and during the first few miles of the race.) Very well organized and great medical staff and facilities in the stadium after the race.

Race Tips:

It's a smaller race so there are no issues with crowding, but large enough to have good water stops. The finisher shirt was a little disappointing last year, as it only had some lettering on the lower hip area of the shirt. They should proudly display their marathon logo in the front like most marathons! The second half of the course is tree lined...great for shade but can play tricks on your real time GPS, so be prepared to wear a pace band and watch the mile markers, or have a calibrated foot pod to help. In 2017, I was going to run Grandma's Marathon, but because of unusual weather patterns, this race was going to be 15-20 degrees cooler than Grandma's, so I switched, as this marathon allows you to sign up as late as the Wednesday before the race online, possibly even the day before at the expo. It was a good choice, as this course if flatter than Grandma's. It's all about the weather, and this race is inexpensive enough to be a late minute alternative, if you have a passport! The course is flat, but I didn't think it was so flat that it caused issues, it has a few very small rolling hills to break it up a little.
