Lakefront Marathon

Milwaukee, WI

Course Description

The Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon offers a moderately challenging road course that showcases the urban landscape and natural coastlines of southeastern Wisconsin.

The course begins in downtown Milwaukee along West Wisconsin Avenue, right on the south side of the Baird Center. Traveling entirely on paved city streets, parkways, and highways, the route shares its first 10 miles with the half-marathon field, generating an energetic start. Runners head north through shaded neighborhood streets and regional parks before turning south to run right along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, ultimately guiding toward a finish line inside Henry Maier Festival Park.

Runner cross the iconic Hoan Bridge twice over the course of the race. The first arrives near mile 8.5, where athletes face a steep, half-mile climb to the bridge peak that gains roughly 125 vertical feet. The route then continues south through the communities of St. Francis and Cudahy before making a turnaround. Marathoners re-encounter the Hoan Bridge from the south end near mile 25, forcing a late-stage uphill climb that heavily tests fatigued leg muscles. Over 40% of the entire course runs directly alongside Lake Michigan, providing sweeping waterfront views but leaving runners highly exposed to morning sun and open maritime winds.

A smart pacing strategy requires immense discipline during the first half of the race, specifically when tackling the initial approach to the Hoan Bridge. Overextending on the early inclines or fighting the open coastal winds can completely destroy a runner's reserves before they face the grueling, late-stage return climb over the bridge near the end of the race.

Well Organized, Tough Hills

Full Review:

I ran this in 2024. It was extremely well run for a marathon of this size. Lots of pace groups, quick expo pick up, lots of aid stations, tons of volunteers.

Race Tips:

I found the course to be difficult. Running uphill over the bridge and being exposed to high winds was tough.

Travel/Logistics Tips:

I liked the start area, it was close to many hotels. The marathon started right on time.

There are no corrals. You can wear extra layers in the start area, then hand them to a friend over the small fence. Spectators can line up parallel to the starting area.

First timer

Full Review:

This was my first marathon and it was great. I know I have no frame of reference, however, I have run many other races, so I can say this was well organized, great course, and I would absolutely run it again.

Race Tips:

Mostly flat with a few inclines. Lots of downhill to start and around mile 24 onward is mostly downhill.

Full Review:

Pros: well organized, easy bus to the start, inside wait for the start, beautiful lake finish

Cons: some roads were had many potholes

Pretty and gentle

Full Review:

Gentle grade, not too many turns. Well organized, great pace groups. Great small-city alternative to Chicago!

Race Tips:

Can be windy the last few miles by the lake.

Great BQ Marathon

Full Review:

Raced it twice both BQ. Well organized by Badgerland Striders. Gentle downhill at mile 24. Great organization for 37 years

Travel/Logistics Tips:

Stay warm inside till racetime, Great free parking and transportation

Full Review:

Well-established (36 years), well-supported and organized, slightly downhill, near Lake Michigan (cooler temps)

Full Review:

Not the fastest of courses but the north woods beauty makes up for it.

Race Tips:

Be conservative for the first 1/2 of the marathon and build during the second half which is the fastest part of the course. Watch out for the 1/2 marathon walkers as they may not be watching out for you and you will catch up to them during your run.
