The Gold Coast Marathon offers a flat, fast, and highly scenic coastal route through Queensland, Australia. As an AIMS-certified and Boston Marathon qualifying course, it is globally recognized for its minimal elevation changes, featuring a total gain of only about 62 meters (204 feet). The race is widely considered excellent for setting personal records due to its smooth terrain and mild, low-humidity winter running conditions.
The course is a an out-and-back route that takes place entirely on fully paved roads. Starting at the Southport Broadwater Parklands, runners head south along the coastline, passing through iconic areas such as Surfers Paradise and Mermaid Beach before reaching the southern turning point at Miami. The route then traces back north past the start precinct, extending further up to a northern turning point at Runaway Bay before heading south one final time to finish back at the Southport Broadwater Parklands.
Notable sections include long, uninterrupted straightaways running parallel to the region's surf beaches and the broadwater, which provide expansive water views but leave runners exposed to the morning sun and any coastal breezes. The course utilizes segments of the Gold Coast Highway and coastal roads like Northcliffe Terrace to maximize space and runner comfort. Because this is a massive event that draws thousands of participants, runners can count on dense, high-energy crowd support and designated entertainment zones across the entire metropolitan route.
A practical pacing strategy involves locking into your target race pace immediately and maintaining a consistent pace on the flat terrain. Because there are no significant hills or steep climbs to break up your stride, success depends on managing your effort and staying disciplined through the open, exposed stretches near the ocean.
Don't waste months of training only to run the wrong pace.
Gold Coast Marathon Pace Bands are adjusted for the specific terrain of the course, your goal time and pacing strategies.
