The Durango Marathon features a scenic, high-altitude road course designed to highlight the beauty of southwestern Colorado during the autumn season. Located in the high country, runners should expect the inherent challenge of racing at an altitude well over 6,500 feet. The course is predominantly flat to rolling and runs along fully paved routes, offering a smooth and predictable surface for athletes navigating the distance.
The race takes runners through and around the mountain town of Durango on quiet road surfaces. Most of the course utilizes wide road shoulders, keeping the path clear and runner-friendly with minimal complete closures. The route features a start and finish area located near historic downtown Durango and the iconic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Station, creating an easily accessible course for both participants and spectators.
