Cedar Rapids Marathon

Cedar Rapids, IA
Sunday, April 25, 2027

  5 Stars from 1 Reviews

Course Description

The Cedar Rapids Marathon offers a rolling road course through Eastern Iowa. Designed to minimize technical difficulties, the race is USATF-certified, making it an option for runners striving to achieve a Boston Marathon qualifying time or set a personal record.

The course begins and finishes in the heart of downtown Cedar Rapids, travelling entirely on wide, paved surfaces. Runners quickly find their rhythm as the route transitions out of the downtown sector to wind through historic neighborhoods, vibrant business districts, and local scenic parks. The route also incorporates an extended stretch along the paved Cedar River Trail system, guiding participants past peaceful riverside paths and open territory bordering the Cedar River.

Notable sections along the course include long, straight roadways designed with only gentle turns to favor an uninterrupted stride. The course has a couple of hills from approximately mile 3.5 to mile 4.9 that rise 160 feet before descending back down near mile 5.5. While running along the Cedar River Trail, participants pass near Mount Trashmore and experience scenic parkway views.

Great inaugural race- course is pretty, support was top notch

Full Review:

This was the first Cedar Rapids marathon, and the organizers hit it out of the park. The expo was small but flawless. There is lots of street parking near the convention center so in and out was easy.

The course originally had two big hills, but they changed it so there was only one from mile 3 to 5. It wasn't that bad early in the race. Lots of spectators and water stations.

It was hot to start (76). Some rain in the first half was welcome, but the iced towels in the second half of the race were superb. Several times bike support crew asked me if I was ok in the second half and offered carbs or water. Pretty city, and great race. Socks, hat and shirt made a nice swag package.

Race Tips:

I'd take it easy until the end of the first hill. The course was crowded at the beginning anyway, no need to weave. The final turnaround was at mile 18, so its flat after that and you probably can start emptying the tank.

Travel/Logistics Tips:

I stayed at a highway hotel north of downtown. Race day parking was a breeze, as was getting back to my hotel. The Map Room right near the start was great for dinner the night before.
