Real runner feedback on course feel, crowd support, aid stations, and logistics (parking, hotels, restaurants).
This was the first Cedar Rapids marathon, and the organizers hit it out of the park. The expo was small but flawless. There is lots of street parking near the convention center so in and out was easy.
The course originally had two big hills, but they changed it so there was only one from mile 3 to 5. It wasn't that bad early in the race. Lots of spectators and water stations.
It was hot to start (76). Some rain in the first half was welcome, but the iced towels in the second half of the race were superb. Several times bike support crew asked me if I was ok in the second half and offered carbs or water.
Pretty city, and great race. Socks, hat and shirt made a nice swag package.
I'd take it easy until the end of the first hill. The course was crowded at the beginning anyway, no need to weave. The final turnaround was at mile 18, so its flat after that and you probably can start emptying the tank.
I stayed at a highway hotel north of downtown. Race day parking was a breeze, as was getting back to my hotel. The Map Room right near the start was great for dinner the night before.
