The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has announced significant changes to its Boston Marathon qualifying standards, specifically addressing races with considerable net-elevation loss. Beginning with the qualifying window for the 2027 Boston Marathon (which opens September 13, 2025), a new "downhill index" will be applied to results from courses that have a substantial net-downhill profile. This move aims to ensure a more level playing field for all aspiring Boston Marathon participants.
Under the new policy, verified qualifying times from marathons with a net-elevation loss of 1,500 feet (457.2 meters) or more will incur a time adjustment. The adjustments are as follows:
For runners aiming for a Boston Qualifying time without incurring a penalty due to the new downhill index, several marathons fall below the 1,500-foot net elevation drop threshold. These races, all with net-elevation losses between 1,000 and 1,500 feet, will not have a penalty time added under the new guidelines:
**Utah Valley Marathon has announced changes to the 2026 marathon course to eliminate the time penalty.
**Tucson Marathon has announced changes to the 2025 marathon course to eliminate the time penalty.
These marathons offer scenic courses and the potential for fast times while remaining unaffected by the new downhill index adjustments. As runners plan their qualifying attempts for the 2027 Boston Marathon and beyond, understanding these new guidelines and course profiles will be crucial.
