This course is old Florida scenery with mossy trees, plenty of shade, fishing happening as you run by and bird watching aplenty. It is very flat and fast and has a wonderful after party with local beers and pizza. The shirt is a soft tech of recycled materials and the medals are always nice. I've run this one every single year since inception.
Race Tips
Save a teeny bit of energy for the Grenada bridge at mile 25, but there's also a beer and aid station just before the bridge to help. You get to finish by going down the bridge and around to a scenic, sprawling park.
There are great family owned restaurants and breweries nearby if you are staying there from out of town. I live about an hour away, so I just drive in, but always enjoy a local restaurant to celebrate after.

I Love, Love, Love the Tomoka Marathon. I have run this marathon twice and out of the 10 marathons (5 different venues) I've run, this is by far my favorite. The start/finish is in a beautiful park, it is a single loop, the middle half has nearly no houses - just great views of the intercostal waterway, lots of shade, a short in and out of the Bulow Creek State park (dirt road), the last ¼ through a neighborhood with many residents out cheering on the runners and displaying inspirational signs, then it is over the Grenada bridge and the finish line.
Race Tips
The first ½ mile is very narrow through dark streets so be patient, soon the course will open up and you can make your moves, adjust your pace and settle in for a beautiful race adventure. About ¾ of the way through the race you will make a trip into the Bulow Creek State Park, this is about a mile in and then turn around and back out on a sandy dirt road. This does not bother me as I also do trail runs but some runners complained. Then be prepared for the only "hill" on the course the Grenada bridge (less than ½ mile from the finish) is short but very steep.
I live just over an hour away so I drive in the morning of the race, I like to get to races early so parking is never a problem for me. There is an elementary school where you can park. I don’t really go for the after party and usually leave soon after finishing and having a bite to eat but this one seem as nice as the rest.

I just went through the course today, 2/22/14, just to take a look at it and I think it is a great route for a marathon.
Race Tips
Besides the bridge on the Granada Boulevard that runners will encounter at the beginning, the course is flat and there will be many shaded areas all over.
I live around the area and there is parking mostly on the streets. There is a closed building next to SunTrust bank, two blocks from starting/finish line, that you should be able to use. The beach is four blocks away and the city should open it early for parking.
