Real runner feedback on course feel, crowd support, aid stations, and logistics (parking, hotels, restaurants).
I ran the marathon in a relay in 2024 and again in 2026. I ran the half marathon in 2025. In each of these races I loved the warm room and restrooms available at the start and finish. The course was challenging but so rewarding! Spectators encouraged us along much of the race, which was so motivating. Having a sustainability committee for this race took things up a notch for me. Overall, I highly recommend this race. Great options for all runners!
I’ve run the Classic City Marathon every year since it began, across multiple distances. I completed the full marathon in 2024, ran the half marathon and relay in 2025, and this year I had the privilege of serving as a pacer for the half marathon.
Overall, I’ve had a consistently positive experience. The race is extremely well organized: from packet pickup to race morning logistics, everything feels smooth and stress free. The course is beautiful, taking you through downtown Athens, the UGA campus, and some scenic greenway sections.
Take advantage of the indoor start/finish area, it makes a big difference on cold mornings.
Parking is convenient near the start, with plenty of options. If you’re staying downtown, you can easily walk to the start line.
This event is truly put on by runners, for runners. ?????????
The Classic City Marathon Association is an incredible group of dedicated volunteers who have thoughtfully considered every detail to make this a fantastic marathon experience from start to finish.
Athens, GA is built on hills! When you head out of the city you’ll enjoy some nice downhill running, but when you come back toward downtown near the end of the race, you’ll be heading uphill. There’s just no way around it! ? Be sure to save a little in the tank for those final miles. ????????
Taking place in beautiful Athens, GA — home of the Georgia Bulldogs — this race is surrounded by plenty of convenient parking, wonderful hotels, and some fantastic local restaurants. It’s the perfect spot to turn race weekend into a fun getaway! ?????????
I will say first that I loved the marathon. This was my 15th full marathon, and it was great. The course was designed with the runner experience in mind. There are hills, but that is what you expect in the Piedmont region. They are more rolling hills, as I think my elevation gain came out at about 1,000 feet gain and about 1,100 feet loss. So a net loss on the elevation.
What I wanted to say more though, was that the organizers of this race are incredible. In the weeks, days, and probably hours before the race, there was the imminent threat of a significant ice storm. The University of Georgia, which is in Athens, sent all of their students home because of a state of emergency declared by the governor. Through all of this, these race organizers stayed calm and showed resolve, as they watched other events and races being cancelled. They resolved to hold this race, communicated well with participants that they were going to hold the race if at all possible. And in the end, they pulled it off. They looked like geniuses because the race weather was perfect. The ice storm didn't even hit until late that night, which is exactly what they said would happen. I believe they event consulted with a meteorologist from UGA to help with their decisions. Just outstanding work. They should be commended just for that. Any race that can show that strength and resolve should be commended.
Run this race. The Classic City Marathon will take care of you. They will welcome you to the city. You'll have a great experience.
I stayed at the race hotel which was downtown, parked in their deck. I ate at The National the night before, which was amazing. Right downtown. Great city.
Everything that the race planners can control has been outstanding at this race for both 2025 and 2026! Complete information ahead of time. Packet pickup and Expo are very close to the main hotel, and they use an INDOOR convention center so you can use INDOOR bathrooms before the race and then have a nice warm place to gather and hang out after the race. Plenty of excited volunteers everywhere along the course. Changes of scenery to keep you going. They manage to make faster racers and also slower first-timers all feel welcome! Overall, you can just tell that this race is put on by runners and professionals who know what it takes to create a great race day experience.
Read the info they provide about the course and be ready for the steady uphill miles near the end of the course, they are not kidding
If you fly to Atlanta, use the Groome Transportation shuttle to get to the race hotel in downtown Athens. Packet pickup, Expo, race start, race finish, and plenty of restaurants are all together in the walkable downtown area. If you have to drive, park on the University of Georgia campus.
This race is amazing. You can tell it is put on by runners. The race shirts are great!
The half marathon is a fast course. There are hills but the downhills on the course make it fast.
Great spectators!! Lots of joy and encouraging crowd! Very well organized.
This was a great experience from start to finish. The race starts at the classic center so there are actual bathrooms you can use which is so nice for a winter race. There is great energy at the start with good music and the sun coming up over downtown is just beautiful. The course is listed as hilly on this site BUT it is not. It is a rolling course and the Half Marathon is fast. I had one of my fastest half times on this course because there are great downhills that balance out the hills on the course. Finally the post race experience is great. Fantastic swag, great shirts, and good food.
The Half Marathon Course goes down and flattens out early in the race. There's one big hill late in the race but then you get to then run down a big hill coming into the finish. Save some for the end of the race and you will have a good time!
This was an amazing experience at only the 2nd year of this race. We had a very cold day, but there were plenty of inside spaces (and inside bathrooms) to use before the start of the race. The rolling course went all through the beautiful town of Athens, and hit a lot of rails-to-trails and greenways. I like running on greenways, but that may not be for everyone. The largest hill on the course comes between miles 22 to 24, which is a tough placement. There's also a pretty rolling finish back to downtown Athens. The finish area and swag (especially the long-sleeve tech T-shirt) were first rate. The after party at a brewery downtown was awesome. I had a great time in Athens!
Like I said, the course is rolling all the way. There are some flat areas on the course, but they are few and far between. The course has some long greenway sections too, but the race organizers put bands and cheer zones on some of the more lonely stretches. To me, I liked that. This is a January race, so it was cold. I prefer to run marathons in the cold, rather than the heat.
I stayed at the Hotel Indigo, which gave a discount to runners. It was nice and very close to the start line. I ate at several fantastic restaurants. Some of those were The National, The World Famous, and lunch the day after the race at Dawgone Good BBQ - great. Athens has great food. I visited the local Fleet Feet as well, which was a good experience.
The race organization was impeccable - among the best I've ever run. The course is tough...hills are long and 2024 was windy at the worst points...but...the temperature was perfect (40ish at the start and 45ish at the finish). The later start was really nice too. The course was well marked and the paved trail that makes up a big chunk was a great running surface.
The overall experience was fantastic, especially for the inaugural running. They really did a great job showcasing everything that makes Athens, GA a great town.
The expo was held at a local brewery with live music. Even though it was pouring rain outside where the vendor tents were the atmosphere was still great.
Pre-race they had the Classic Center (convention center) open to stay warm and use real bathrooms. Gear check was there and very smooth. Lots of volunteers to point folks in the right direction.
At the starting line they probably could have used a few more port-a-potties for those who skipped gear check or needed a last minute potty. The lines were a little long for those but I think everyone ended up being able to start on time. Part of the UGA Redcoat Marching Band came out to play the National Anthem so that was a nice touch.
Finish line wasn't the most scenic since it was tucked back behind the convention center, but the crowd was lively. Back inside the convention center for the finish line festival had an OK selection of snacks. Lot's of tables and chairs for sit and wait on friends/family to finish and celebrate.
A fairly hilly course but only a couple very short, steep climbs. Most of the elevation gain comes from two long stretches. The first is part of the out-and-back section, but seeing all the runners come back towards you kept spirits high. The second stretch is more grueling as it's in the last 6 miles, but this is also where crowd support was the best.
There's only one sharp U-turn and it's at the top of the long climb. Unfortunately it's also right at the half way point where the relay hand-off is so there was a bit of congestion. Being such a small race (400 marathoners, 400 relay teams) it wasn't too bad but if the race grows it might become a problem.
Aid stations were plentiful and well supported. They used re-usable water cups that had a good weight to them and very flexible which made it easy to pour into your mouth on the go. Also had Powerade at every stop along with a few port-a-potties. I only remember seeing gels at one stop so be prepared to pack your own.
Definitely not a BQ friendly course if you're on the cusp but still very reasonable to have a good finishing time if you've trained for hills.
The downtown start/finish is central to all the hotels. If you drive in, the street parking is free but many of the lots are reserved for churches on Sunday mornings so check ahead of time. There's also a lot at the Classic Center.
Downtown Athens has a ton of great food options for both before and after the race. Stay a few days and check out the music scene that birthed the B-52s and REM!
