The ORRC Vernonia Marathon is a Boston-qualifying , point-to-point road, rail-trail race in Oregon. Known for its steady, gradual elevation profile, the course is a net-downhill route that favors runners who can maintain a consistent cadence over a long, gentle descent. It is widely considered one of the faster courses in the Pacific Northwest due to its lack of sharp climbs and technical turns.
The race starts at Cedar Ridge near Vernonia and finishes at Banks High School. The terrain is a mixed-surface; the first few miles are on paved country roads, while the majority of the race (approximately 21 miles) takes place on the Banks-Vernonia State Trail. This trail consists of paved asphalt throughout, providing a smooth surface despite its forested setting. The course is relatively straight, following the path of an old railroad line.
The course elevation profile has a gradual ascent followed by a long, steady descent. The course features nearly 500 feet of total elevation gain and 1,000 feet of loss.
The Vernonia Marathon offers excellent PR (Personal Record) potential, particularly for runners who enjoy long, uninterrupted stretches of road. Because it is a rail-trail, there are virtually no steep hills or sharp turns to break a runner's rhythm. PR attempts are most successful for those who remain disciplined during the early climb and capitalize on the 12-mile descent and flat finish. It is an ideal course for runners seeking a Boston Qualifier.
Don't waste months of training only to run the wrong pace.
