Race the Lake Marathon

Cooperstown, NY
Saturday, June 6, 2026

  5 Stars from 1 Reviews

Course Description
The rolling Race the Lake Marathon starts and finishes in Glimmerglass State Park and circles Otsego Lake.

The Race the Lake Marathon is a challenging, scenic road course that tests an athlete's endurance through continuous elevation changes. Winding through Central New York, the course accumulates a demanding total elevation gain of approximately 1550 feet. Both USATF-certified and sanctioned, this race serves as an official Boston Marathon Qualifier.

The race course is designed as a single, large loop that circles clockwise entirely around the perimeter of Otsego Lake. Starting and finishing inside Glimmerglass State Park in Cooperstown, New York, runners travel along scenic county roads and highways that pass through Springfield, Middlefield, and the Town of Otsego. The running surface is fully paved, and the lake is on the runner's right-hand side for nearly the entire 26.2-mile journey, offering regular waterfront views.

Notable milestones along the loop include historic and cultural landmarks such as the Glimmerglass Opera, The Farmers' Museum, the Fenimore Art Museum, the Otesaga Resort Hotel, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Because the marathon is run on country roads, runners face constant elevation changes throughout the loop, consisting of rolling hills.

A successful pacing strategy requires cautious pace management and an early acceptance of the rolling terrain, as banking time on the fluctuating hills can lead to an early bonk and difficult last few miles.

This was a well run race considering its size and that it was a first time event. The race is mostly rural and scenic. Volunteers and the race director were enthusiastic and helpful. The course is hilly and challenging throughout. Overall a positive experience at a small low key scenic race.
