SoCal Marathon

Huntington Beach, CA

Course Description

From the race organizers - This is a fun course in Southern California. This course runs on the Santa Ana River Trail from Yorba Linda to Huntington Beach State Park. This route truly spans Southern California from the dryer desert land to areas near Disneyland to the Beach. The course is primarily flat and straight but has a gradual downhill slant following the river to the ocean.

The SOCAL River Marathon is a point-to-point course that drops nearly 400 feet through Orange County, California. Starting inland and moving toward the coast, the route features a net-downhill profile with a gradual, continuous decline. It provides a gentle, downward slope with minimal climbing as it guides runners from the start line toward the ocean.

The entire race takes place on the paved surface of the Santa Ana River Trail, running from Yorba Linda all the way to the finish line at Huntington Beach State Park. This dedicated multi-use recreation path keeps the course separate from vehicular traffic. The trail spans a variety of changing landscapes, shifting from the drier inland terrain, passing near landmarks like the Honda Center and Angel Stadium, and following the river directly to the beach.

Runners should be aware that because the course relies entirely on an open river trail, it offers minimal shade. This layout leaves participants exposed to the elements, making the morning sun and potential coastal headwinds prominent factors, particularly in the later miles.

A smart pacing strategy on this course centers on establishing a steady, even pace early to take natural advantage of the gradual, net-downhill decline. The uninterrupted, straight nature of the paved trail makes it well-suited for runners who favor a predictable, steady route. However, runners must budget their energy effectively to manage any headwinds or sun exposure as they approach the finish line at the beach.

Well supported and organized

Full Review:

I ran this race March 2 2024 and had a great experience. Everything was organized well, from parking, bus loading, hydration stations and course markings. The crowds are light but the friendliness and energy of the volunteers was fabulous. I would definitely run it again!!

Race Tips:

Weather was all over the place, which I'm told it normal in CA that time of year so be ready for anything! We had warm sun, then heavy heavy down pours, strong winds for a couple miles. Was like almost all four seasons in one race!

Travel/Logistics Tips:

Parking took a bit of time so arrive at 6 to get a good spot.

Consistently Strong Headwind and Poor Aid Station Support for Fast Runners

Full Review:

The course is downhill point to point. But the race is held in early March, when there is usually increasingly strong wind from the coast during the day, resulting in increasingly strong headwind (10 mph and beyond) almost during the entire race. No buildings help block the wind because the course is along a river valley towards the coast. Because of limited number of participants, no runner blocks could possibly form for fast runners to follow to alleviate the effect of headwind. The headwind makes this course actually very slow, in particular for those who try to qualify for Olympic Trial and Boston Marathon, etc. Runners usually finish this course at least 10 minutes longer than their normal finishing time. In addition, for those for BQ and above, many of the aid stations are ill-prepared. There were no aid station and no water for the last 7 miles during my race, when the runners had to battle against the strongest headwind during the entire race. Would not recommend this race to anyone who would want to achieve some qualification time. The volunteers at the finishing line are very nice and helpful though. And the ice creams there are pretty good! ^ ^

Race Tips:

Practice how to breathe effectively against consistently super strong headwind (10 mph and beyond) for at least 20 miles.

2023 Race

Full Review:

Nice scenery and a steady downhill for the first half. Headwind throughout the second half. Amazingly I only encountered 3 aid stations for the entire race. The volunteers at the aid stations were moving so those behind may have had a few more. Aid stations were not equipped with gel's as advertised. Luckily a cyclist gave me a sip of their water bottle otherwise I may have been severely dehydrated.

Race Tips:

Carry your own fuel.

Travel/Logistics Tips:

Stay near the beach.
