The mostly flat Pecos River Challenge Marathon travels two full loops and a partial loop around Lake Carlsbad, a section of the Pecos River flowing through Carlsbad.
Each loop of the double loop course consists of 2.9 miles of paved paths along the Pecos River and 10.2 miles of residential and park roads. There is one “downhill” from mile 9.9 to 10.5 that drops 39 ft.
The course is the lowest in New Mexico and averages (3,110 ft) - just 268 ft above the State’s lowest point (2,842 ft).
