4.8 Stars from 4 ReviewsThe Cape Cod Marathon offers a fast and scenic coastal road race that loops through Falmouth, Massachusetts. The single-loop course alternates between fully paved municipal streets, historic coastal drives, and smooth segments of the paved Shining Sea Bikeway. The race begins and ends at the Mullen Hall School on Katharine Lee Bates Road at just 7 feet above sea level. From the start/finish area, the route hugs the coastline of Nantucket Sound, winds through the village of Woods Hole, utilizes inland country lanes, and traces an out-and-back coastal section before directing back to the school finish line.
Between miles 3 and 6, runners face a mixture of flat to rolling hills while traversing the famous Falmouth Road Race course in reverse, passing the iconic Nobska Lighthouse and hitting the course's peak elevation of 49 feet. The route later transitions onto the flat asphalt of the Shining Sea Bikeway before emerging back onto open ocean drives. Runners should prepare for a short hill at mile 12 that rises to 30 feet, which they must confront a second time at mile 23.4 on the return leg of the out-and-back segment. Because the course is designed to maximize views of Martha’s Vineyard and the sound, these waterfront miles leave athletes exposed to the morning sun and incoming sea breezes.
Pacing strategies center on keeping an even effort through the rolling hills of the first 6 miles to avoid burning out your legs early. Runners must stay mindful of their effort on the open, windswept coastal roads and save enough energy to overcome the repeat hill climb at mile 23.
Don't waste months of training only to run the wrong pace.
