I ran this 2 times before I became disabled but every year I pray that God would give the strength to run it again. You will not be disappointed. I was an average runner and have run New York and San Francisco but they do not compare to what you get from this race. Maybe next year.

Race Tips

Start out average not fast, watch for cars and have a support team, seeing them at preset locations on the way really helped my will power DRINK

One Tough Marathon

Review

This is definitely not for inexperienced runners. VERY challenging, but scenic course. The gravel section features a hill you won't forget. Your finishing time will be significantly longer than a typical marathon. You finish at the Highland Games. You really need to run this very differently from "normal" ones.

Race Tips

Although well supported, make sure you bring a good size water container, as there can be some distance between water stations. Plan on walking during some of the more steep hill sections that seem to go on and on. You run efficient and smart.

Logistical Tips (Hotels, Restaurants, Parking, Discounts, etc.)

Hotels are very expensive here. Recommend you take the dorm option; just make sure you bring your own soap (etc), as they only provide basic linens, small pillows, and TP. The rooms include a private bathroom, but two small bunk style beds.

A true classic and one that you will want to return and do again. Great scenery, well organized and very consistent in what is promised and executed.

Race Tips

First two miles flat....then the toughest climbs are within the next 8.5 miles. You run a nice downhill stretch on the Blue Ridge Parkway, then begin climbing again. The main difference from the first ten miles is that the climbs are shorter and there are several flattish stretches where you can make up time. Pretty shady course and the temps usually work in your favor...seems to get cooler as you ascend.

Logistical Tips (Hotels, Restaurants, Parking, Discounts, etc.)

Hotels are pretty expensive, but they offer a deal to stay one night in a private dorm room which is a great bargain. If you have never done the race, the pasta dinner is a good value and is a valuable opportunity to pick up race info from the more experienced runners.
