In order to make it onto our Downhill Marathon list, marathons must be certified, have a net elevation loss over the course, and the benefit of the sum of the downhill portions has to be greater than the disadvantage of the uphills on the course. There are several marathons that lose elevation from start the finish, but have many hills in between that negate the benefits of the downhill sections. These races, although downhill in nature, are not included in this list.
