Good, challenging course. NOT a race to get a PR - very hilly in the final 6 miles. Nice tree lined streets for most of the race, not huge crowds running or on the sidelines.

Excellent course support. Great water stops and cheer zones, manned by local non-profit orgs. Easy logistics, no course congestion. Enthusiastic pacers.

Race Tips

It's a very hilly course, but the toughest hills are in the last 10 miles. If you are local, it's helpful to take advantage of the free pace course practice runs.

Logistical Tips (Hotels, Restaurants, Parking, Discounts, etc.)

Atlantic Station has plenty of parking, but be sure to enter at the specified entrances to ensure only a $5 fee. Your car may be closer than the gear check location.

review of 2013 Atlanta Marathon.

4 / 5 Stars

This is a smaller marathon in the late fall in Atlanta. It is the only marathon that I have completed, so take my review with a grain of salt. I have run this course three times, twice there was a relay mixed in with the marathoners and this last year (2013) they nixed the relay and added a 10 mile race. As a marathoner, I never encountered a 10 mile participant. The hills in Atlanta are nothing to laugh about. The last six miles of the course are quite challenging as the hills never seem to stop. There are nice "cheering sections" throughout the race, but other than that, there aren't many spectators. The weather has been a bit chilly to start and warms up nicely throughout the morning. As with all Atlanta Track Club events, this race is well organized. If you're looking for a flat course, this is definitely not it, if you are looking for a bit of a challenge, then this is probably perfect.

Race Tips

The Atlanta Track Club does a training program every year for this race. I have found it to be very helpful as they really focus on mileage and working you through the hills. Train for hills, then do more hill training, and then, just for good measure, do one more hill.

Logistical Tips (Hotels, Restaurants, Parking, Discounts, etc.)

Since this is a smaller race that starts and ends at a popular shopping area, there is plenty of parking, but the traffic can back up, so, as with most events, plan accordingly and arrive early.
