The Virginia Creeper Marathon follows an out-and-back first two miles on gently rolling Watauga Road, the rest of the race is run on the Virginia Creeper Trail, a former railroad bed.
One of the two out-and-back segments on the Trail is repeated, as is a short portion of the other segment. Runners pass the start/finish area at 2, 9, 18 and 25 miles.
The Trail is flat to gentle grade, with (except for the occasional wooden trestle) a soft running surface.
The Virginia Creeper Marathon was the 451st largest marathon in the U.S. last year and was the 441st largest in 2015.
Last year 10.8% of finishers qualified for the Boston Marathon and 10% of runners qualified for Boston in 2015.
This gives the Virginia Creeper Marathon the 179th highest percentage of Boston Marathon qualifiers in the U.S. last year and the 189th highest percentage in 2015.
