The Virginia Creeper Marathon follows an out-and-back first two miles on gently rolling Watauga Road, the rest of the race is run on the Virginia Creeper Trail, a former railroad bed.
One of the two out-and-back segments on the Trail is repeated, as is a short portion of the other segment. Runners pass the start/finish area at 2, 9, 18 and 25 miles.
The Trail is flat to gentle grade, with (except for the occasional wooden trestle) a soft running surface.
The Virginia Creeper Marathon was the 445th largest marathon in the U.S. last year and was the 433rd largest in 2015.
This year 2.7% of finishers qualified for the Boston Marathon and 10.8% of runners qualified for Boston in 2016.
This gives the Virginia Creeper Marathon the 176th highest percentage of Boston Marathon qualifiers in the U.S. last year and the 287th highest percentage so far in 2017.
